We did the sea-to-summit hike and man, was the summit worth it! The observatory and the sea of clouds around it are gorgeous, as is the sun as it sets above it all. The views on a clear day are breath taking all the way up the mountain. Bring a jacket; it's cold at the top!
Went for the sunset was really cloudy and the drive was hetic, we got some nice photos but I'd try go for sunrise if I could get up early enough
So I don't think the observatories are open to the public but the Skyline trail is a great ridge walk past many craters
Worth seeing when you're in maui. I've only been for sunset but the view is fantastic. The drive sucks but it's necessary. I heard sunrise needs reservations now.
Dress warm if you plan on visiting. The Observatory is outside the park boundaries so it is off limits from the public. Absolutely beautiful view. Worth the drive.
